I see in Fight Club the strongest and smartest men who ever lived. I see all this potential and I see it squandered. Goddamnit an entire generation! Pumping gas and waiting tables, the slaves with white collars. Advertising has its taste in cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle-children of history, man. No purpose or place; we have no great war, no great depression. Our great war is a spiritual war - our great depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars, but we won't. We're slowly learning that fact, and we're very, very pissed off.

My small tribute to a teacher that has made more than a difference in my life.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said "To laugh often and much
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty,
To find the best in others,
To leave the world a bit better,
Whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is to have succeded."

Mr. Wade has done each of these things.

To laugh often and much: It's hard for me to think of a person that laughs more than Mr. Wade. If I ever was in a bad mood, time with Mr. Wade could make me forget for the moment whatever problems I was having and just laugh. Even if the joke is at my expense (a quite common occurance), Mr. Wade's laughter and jokes have made him more than a teacher that teaches a lesson, they've made him someone how will always put a smile on my face and on the face's of all those around him.

To win the respect of intellegent people: Whether it be the debate community, the kids in his room in the morning, other teachers, or his AP kids, Mr. Wade is respected by the intellegent. Mr. Wade never fails to enlighten us on Kierkegaard's philosophy, the world of Shakespeare, and the value of music. Few teachers have taught me what Mr. Wade has taught me. He's opened up ways of thought that I'd never dream of. He teaches tolerance and love for others, and actually teaches it. Mr. Wade is a man to be respected by anyone of intellegence.

To appreciate beauty: Just look at his room. Look at his music collection. Not only does Mr. Wade appreciate the beauty of art (in every form) he appreciates the beauty in people. This is one teacher that always finds the beauty in each student, and helps that student achieve their potential. For me it was debate, so it's more direct to me as he is the debate coach. For others it's art, and he does his part in encouraging them by a encouraging comment, or putting a photocopy of their artwork on his wall.
That last one covered To find the best in others.

To leave the world a bit better: I cannot even begin to imagine all the ways in which Mr. Wade has touch other's lives. I know he's touched mine, help me become a better person. I know he's touched my friends lives. And he's been teaching longer than I've been alive. Mr. Wade has left the world better, by giving students a teacher that teaches them what's important, teaches them to love literature, to love learning.

To know one life has breathed easier because you have lived: Once again, I cannot fathom how many lives Mr. Wade has made easier. I know mine is one of them. As a debate coach, you introduced me to an activity that has changed my life. My future carrer plans, my choice of college, my friends have all been shaped my an activity that you taught me to love. As a teacher, you have taught me to love literature. Shakespeare is no longer junk to me, it's beauty and genius. I know if any other teacher taught me Heart of Darkness I would have hated it, instead it is one of my favorite books I've ever read (and I've read a lot). You taught me to look past the words on a page and find the meaning in them, the elegance of them. As a person, you've made me interested in Orson Scott Card and Dar Williams. You've always been there if I've had a question on any subject, however stupid. You've told me when I'm being stupid, you've told me when I've slacked. You've told me when I succeeded. I don't know about making my life easier, but you've help me make my life a life I want to live. Thank you.

WARNING: philosophical rambling.

"We do not believe any group of men adequate enough or wise enough to operate without scrutiny or without criticism."
-J. Robert Oppenheimer

I've been told for as long as I can remember that the choices I make should be made by considering if I would want everyone to make those same choices. The idea makes sense, don't be selfish if you don't want everyone to be selfish. But I think it has it's limitations. It's important to realize that because I make a decision, everyone else won't make that same decision. Maybe my decision is good because someone has to make it, but it would be horrible if everyone made it. Take, for example, the critic. The critic creates a constantly agitated atmosphere where every decision is criticized, every person is criticized, every group is criticized, every "moral" is criticized. Now we all know if decisions, people, groups, and "morals" didn't exist, well the world would suck. But that doesn't mean the critic should stop criticizing. Criticism itself is valuable. Everyone criticizing everything would be a horrible thing. But everyone will never criticize everything. And someone has to criticize something. We should realize we aren't and universal, and stop basing our decisions on what they would look like if they were universal.

Brynnlee, my friend!
You're Brynnlee. You sleep in class and ace the
tests, read half of Atlas Shrugged in a day,
and you're the authority when it comes to
debate. On top of it all, you're Kelly's
Goddess! All hail Brynnlee!

High School debate is over. Kind of shocking. Such a big part of my life is over. High School will be over soon too. It's just hit me how soon it's all going to be over. I just can't help thinking how different everything will be in a little less than a month. I'll be out of high school (hopefully). My family won't be living in GA after living here for as long as I can remember. I won't be doing anything debate related. Friends will be getting reading to leave. It's almost like nothing will remain stable. I guess it's not a bad change, I prolly couldn't stand living like this for much longer, but it's sad. So much that has defined my life will be gone.

On a happier note, I'm actually in a really good mood. I did what I considered pretty good at the TOC, the tournament I've been working for all year. I won all my negative rounds, on an argument everyone thought was the stupidest thing in the world. Apparently it's not. My dad came to see me too. That really mad be happy, I never realized he cared so much. He flew home from Colorade, then drove 6 hours up to UK, to watch 2 rounds of mine, only to drive back home, then fly back to Colorado. That was pretty amazing of him. Daddy, if your reading this, thank you for doing that and I love you. It meant a lot. My family's even getting along pretty well for once. Everything seems to be going great. Everything will be just perfect if I can make myself go to personal fitness. Damn that class. So pointless. So unnecessary, yet somehow required. Oh well, I'm in a good mood, one stupid class isn't gonna change that.
